Abstract
This article analyzes how from the foundation of the city, Rome not only defined its hegemony with the use of the army, it also did it with the control of maritime trade, that is, the command of the sea. We will review the history of Rome and highlight those war events that impacted on the origin, development and fragmentation of that political unit which the Romans called Mare Nostrum. A través de este artículo se estudiará cómo desde la fundación de la ciudad, Roma no solo definió su hegemonía con el uso del ejército, también lo hizo con el control del comercio marítimo, es decir, el dominio del mar. Haremos un recorrido en la historia de Roma y resaltaremos aquellos acontecimientos políticos y bélicos que impactaron en el origen, desarrollo y fragmentación de esa unidad política a la que los romanos denominaron Mare Nostrum.
