One elementary strategy for applying precision forestry is based in the definition of homogeneous management zones, or sub-stands. This article reports on the application of the fuzzy k-means method for defining and selecting a suitable number of sub-stands for the purpose of assigning precise management schemes for plantations of Pinus radiata D. Don beginning at four years of age. Four representative stands belonging to Forestal Mininco, S.A. were selected for this study. For sub-stand classification, observations of seven variables related to tree growth were available from inventory measurements taken from grid sampling. The selection of the suitable number of sub-stands was made based on functional validity measures: the fuzzy performance index (FPI) and the modified partition entropy (PME). A mapping of sub-stands was made using the Kriging method of interpolation, and a regression model was estimated to determine significant differences of wood volume (m3·ha-1) between sub-stands. The measures of functional validity imply the division of the stands into four to six sub-stands, a division supported by the coherence of sub-stand mapping and the results of the regression analysis. The results of the study indicate the potential utility of the fuzzy k-means method of homogeneous sub-stand definition for precision forestry.
