This article discusses the development of reading within the School of Arts and Trades in Santiago (EAO), an institution created in mid-nineteenth century with the aim of promoting industrial education among youth from the popular sectors of Chilean society. Such educational emphasis, promoted by the political elite of the time and identified with Enlightenment thinking, was contrasted with the limited roleassigned to the book and the press in a learning environment directed by strict interna! control rules. Despite this, the consumption of texts (and later production of these) Was an essential part of Student's life during the first half of the twentieth century, which allows us to appreciate how reading, initially a practice of little importance and even clandestine, advanced towards their incorporation into the institutional policies, in a process which in turn gave rise to different representations and assimilations by the part of students.Este artículo aborda el desarrollo de la lectura al interior de la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Santiago (EAO), una institución creada a mediados del siglo XIX con el objetivo de impulsar la enseñanza industrial entre jóvenes provenientes de los sectores populares de la sociedad chilena. Tal énfasis educativo, promovido por la élite política de la época e identificado con el pensamiento ilustrado, contrastó con el limitado papel asignado al libro y la prensa en un entorno de aprendizaje dirigido por estrictas normas de control interno. A pesar de esto, el consumo de textos (y más tarde su producción) fue parte esencial de la vida estudiantil durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, lo que permite apreciar cómo la lectura, inicialmente una práctica de escasa importancia e incluso clandestina, avanzó hacia su incorporación a las políticas institucionales, en un proceso que a su vez dio lugar a distintas representaciones y apropiaciones por parte de los estudiantes.
