Lo bello o lo útil. Ideologías en disputa en torno a la creación del primer curso universitario de arquitectura en Chile, 1848-1853

dc.descriptionIn 1849 the first university architecture course in Chile was founded at the University of Chile. Although local historiography has established that the orientation of the course was, at its roots, Beaux-Arts style this term had certainly not been defined in detail. This article analyzes an agonistic episode that emerged from this foundation, in which two discourses that attributed to architecture disparate social, material and ideological values confronted each other. The question that it attempted to answer would revolve around the role and the importance of architecture in Chilean society. Was it associated with its capacity to drive universal values of beauty and culture, or rather its capacity to satisfy the material necessities of a country under construction?en-US
dc.descriptionEn 1849 se fundó el primer curso universitario de arquitectura de Chile, en la Universidad de Chile. Si bien la historiografía local ha establecido que la orientación de este curso fue, en sus bases, beauxartiana, lo cierto es que este término no ha sido definido en detalle. El presente artículo aborda un episodio agonístico que surgió a partir de esta fundación, en que se enfrentaron dos discursos que atribuyeron a la Arquitectura valoraciones sociales, materiales e ideológicas dispares. La pregunta que se intentaba responder discurría en torno al papel y la importancia de la arquitectura en la sociedad chilena: ¿estaba asociado a su capacidad de vehicular valores universales de belleza y cultura o, más bien, a su capacidad de satisfacer las necesidades materiales de un país en construcción?  es-ES
