dc.descriptionThis article examines the process that took place as changes were made to the way in which indigenous manual labor was used (as mandated by the Spanish government through the encomienda) in Central Chile towards the end of the sixteenth century through the first half of the seventeenth century. As gold veins were depleted and the Chilean economy changed, moving toward agro-livestock production, Spanish representatives began slowly and tentatively, at first, then massively and permanently, to move workers to farms and ranches where they lived and lent personal services. Other tax payers paid indigenous people, bought slaves or contracted those who were available to work regardless of their origin. dc.descriptionEste artículo estudia el proceso de cambio en las formas de ocupación de la mano de obra indígena encomendada de Chile central a fines del siglo XVI y durante la primera mitad del siglo XVII. A partir del agotamiento de las vetas auríferas y el cambio en la economía chilena, que se orientó a la producción agro-ganadera, los encomenderos dieron inicio primero lenta y provisoriamente y, más tarde, de manera masiva y permanente al traslado de parte de sus tributarios a sus chacras y estancias, donde estos comenzaron a residir y prestar servicio personal. Otros arrendaron indios, compraron esclavos o contrataron a los que estaban disponibles para trabajar mediante asiento, no importando su origen. Ello llevó a que para el siglo xvii la mayoría de ellos viviera en tales propiedades rurales, en desmedro de sus asentamientos originales, siendo estas el principal núcleo de poblamiento rural indígena en Chile central y donde convivían, se emparentaban y unían sujetos de los más diversos orígenes geográficos, adscripciones legales e identidades.es-ES
