This article analyzes the sale of Lafquenche Mapuche land in the Arauco district during the years prior to peacemaking in Araucania. Through the notary’s registry, the identities of salespeople, the sizes of land plots and transaction values are revealed. The article suggests that the systematic sale of properties created the material basis for the subsequent integration of Araucania and its inhabitants into the Chilean State. A complementary argument is made that silencing of this issue not only entirely limits Lafquenche historic agency, but also makes it difficult to understand the position that the rest of the Mapu dungun- speaking tribes took with regards to the challenges imposed simultaneously bymodernity, mercantilism and the state systemEn este artículo se analizan las ventas de tierras ancestrales que realizaron los mapuches lafquenches (también denominados costinos) del distrito de Arauco en los años previos a la pacificación de la Araucanía. A través del registro notarial se reconstituye a los sujetos vendedores, la magnitud de los terrenos y el valor de las transacciones. Se plantea que la venta sistemática de los predios constituyó la base material de la posterior integración de la Araucanía y sus habitantes a la jurisdicción del Estado chileno. De modo complementario se argumenta que el silencio sobre este tema no tan solo omite la agencia histórica de los lafquenches en el proceso sino que, también, impide comprender la posición que asumieron las demás tribus de habla mapudungun frente a los desafíos y presiones que les planteaban, de modo simultáneo, la modernidad, el mercantilismo y el sistema estatal.
