| dc.description | In this article, I analyze the impact of the Saint-Domingue Revolution in Brazil. My main proposal is that the revolutionary message, especially the idea of political equality, affected the social group made up of free and freed men of African descent more so than it did slaves. I have used concepts essential to Norbert Elias’s sociology (figurational sociology and the old, oligarchic-type society, as well as the democratic and representative type) and the general theory of slavery (slavery as a process and change in status, as well as the freedom-slavery continuum). Finally, I suggest that my conclusions with regard to Brazil can be generalized to the social figuration that encompassed the Atlantic world once the social position of free and freed men of African descent was marked by the recurrence, connection and structural regularities common to all American-slaverysocial figurations | en-US |
| dc.description | Analizo en este artículo el impacto de la revolución de Saint-Domingue en Brasil. Mi proposición central es que el mensaje revolucionario, sobre todo el tema de la igualdad política, afectó con especialidad al grupo social formado por afrodescendientes libres y libertos, y no a los esclavos. Al elaborar este análisis he usado conceptos oriundos de la sociología de Norbert Elias (figuración social y sociedad de tipo antiguo –u oligárquico– y de tipo democrático y representativo) y de la teoría general del esclavismo (esclavitud como proceso y mudanza de estatus y continuum esclavitud-libertad). Sugiero, al final, que mis conclusiones con relación a Brasil pueden generalizarse a toda la figuración social englobante del mundo atlántico, una vez que la posición social de afrodescendientes libres y libertos estaba marcada por recurrencias, planos de conexiones y regularidades estructurales comunes a todas las figuraciones sociales esclavistas americanas. | es-ES |
