dc.descriptionUsing declassifi ed US documents, this article examines the complex relationship between the Democracia Crisitana (PDC) −Chile’s largest political party− and the Military Regime, between the years 1973 and 1982. The American idea of the PDC was primarily centered on its leaders, especially on the political fi gure Eduardo Frei Montalva. This article argues that American documents reveal that of Eduardo Frei Montalva’s numerous interactions with the international community were to critique the Military Regime, which happened much earlier than it was supposed. The same documentation reveals that the regime’s animosity and growing irritation with Frei’s political activity in Chile and on the international scene, reached obsessive levels in trying to build a negative image of its main enemy.en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo analiza, a partir de los documentos desclasifi cados de los archivos de EE.UU., las complejas relaciones entre la Democracia Cristiana –el mayor partido político chileno– y el régimen militar, entre 1973 y 1982. La visión norteamericana del PDC está fuertemente personalizada en sus líderes, en primer lugar en la fi gura de Eduardo Frei Montalva. Planteamos en este artículo que la documentación norteamericana revela la gran actividad internacional del ex Presidente, que más tempranamente de lo que se pensaba se orientó a la crítica del régimen militar, y al mismo tiempo muestra la animadversión y creciente irritación del régimen con la actividad política de Frei Montalva, tanto dentro del país como en el escenario internacional, hasta niveles de obsesión y construcción de imagen de enemigo principal.es-ES
