dc.descriptionThis paper analyzes the production of sculptures by Benjamín Mendizábal Vizcarra (1875-1957). In Lima, the critical assessment of his sculptures followed positivist ideologies that were opposed to his creative freedom. Originating from this controversy the research is divided into three topics: the critique of his Apollonian Incas, the vicissitudes of both his monumental project Manco Cápac (1917), his bronze reliefs made in 1926, and the nominal difficulty of his incaists art works. Based on historical ethnographic studies with the idea of accomplishing verisimilitude in the arts, Mendizábal adapted his Apollonian interpretation of his Incaist sculptures towards a scientifical purification, the product of the influence of artistic critiques and the establishment response in Lima.en-US
dc.descriptionEn este artículo se analiza la producción escultórica de Benjamín Mendizábal Vizcarra (1875-1957). La recepción crítica de sus esculturas en Lima siguió discursos positivistas que se opusieron a su libertad estética. A partir de esta controversia, la investigación se divide en tres temas: la crítica a sus Incas apolíneos; las vicisitudes tanto del proyecto monumental de Manco Cápac (1917) como de sus relieves broncíneos hechos en 1926 y la dificultad nominal de las esculturas calificadas como incaistas. Basado en estudios histórico-etnográficos y amparado en la idea de lo verosímil en el arte, modificó la lectura apolínea de sus esculturas incaístas hacia una depuración científica, producto del influjo de la crítica artística y la respuesta oficialista en Lima.es-ES
