This article analyses the life of Juan Egaña, focusing particularly on his philosophical ideas and productions. For this purpose, the works of the politician are studied, together with his personal letters, official reports, and other testimonies of the time. The topics covered, together with a biographical account of Egaña, are: logic, natural theology, human and animal psychology, parapsychology, philosophy of progress, utopian republics (focusing on the idea of American utopia), Americanism and scholasticism. It also explains the causes of independence in Chile and the role of Juan Egaña in the political emancipation and constitutional trials, identifying the Constitution of 1823 as his masterpiece. It is concluded that the interest in the study of the figure of Juan Egaña lies in his contributions in the constitutional and legal field, all the above to finally conclude that Juan Egaña is a vital source to know the philosophical thought of the time for being the only author of his time with a constant philosophical concern that left his thoughts in writing.El presente artículo analiza la vida de Juan Egaña, centrándose particularmente en sus ideas y producciones filosóficas. Para esto, se estudian las obras del político, junto con sus cartas personales, informes oficiales y otros testimonios de la época. Los temas que se tratan, junto con un relato biográfico de Egaña, son: lógica, teología natural, psicología humana y animal, parapsicología, filosofía del progreso, repúblicas utópicas (deteniéndose en la idea de utopía americana), el americanismo y la escolástica. Asimismo, se explican las causas de la independencia en Chile y el rol de Juan Egaña en la emancipación política y en los ensayos constitucionales, identificando a la Constitución de 1823 como su obra maestra. Se concluye que el interés en el estudio de la figura de Juan Egaña radica en sus aportes en el ámbito constitucional y jurídico, todo lo anterior para, finalmente, concluir que Juan Egaña constituye una fuente vital para conocer el pensamiento filosófico de la época por ser el único autor de su tiempo con una constante preocupación filosófica que dejó su pensamiento por escrito.
