| dc.description | This article aims to analyse the process of conformation of the vaccinator as a health profession in Chile between 1805 and 1887. Since the arrival of the smallpox vaccine in Chile it was necessary for a group of people to learn how to apply it and then to travel across the territory to manage it. In accordance with this, it is suggested that the way in which the vaccinators did their work was decisive for the impulse and coverage of vaccination. Likewise, the growing need to increase the number of vaccinated people boosted the conformation of the vaccinator as a profession. This considered the establishment of functions and duties, and both a mechanism to learn and a procedure to supervise its practice. In sum, I argue that the changes that were brought about by the diffusion and expansion of the smallpox vaccine are closely linked to the professionalization of the role of the vaccinator.Keywords: vaccinators, public policy, profession, vaccine, smallpox. | en-US |
| dc.description | Este artículo busca analizar el proceso de conformación del vacunador en tanto profesión sanitaria en Chile entre 1805 y 1887. Desde la llegada de la vacuna contra la viruela a Chile fue necesario que un grupo de personas aprendiera a aplicarla para luego recorrer el territorio y administrarla. En concordancia con ello planteamos que la forma en que los vacunadores ejecutaron su trabajo fue determinante en el impulso y cobertura de la vacunación. Asimismo, las necesidades crecientes de aumentar el número de vacunados impulsaron la conformación del vacunador como profesión, lo que consideró el establecimiento de funciones y deberes, un mecanismo de aprendizaje de la práctica y un procedimiento para fiscalizar el ejercicio de ésta. En definitiva, afirmamos que los cambios que trajo consigo la difusión y masificación de la vacuna contra la viruela se encuentran estrechamente vinculados a la profesionalización del rol del vacunador.Palabras clave: vacunador, política pública, profesión, vacuna, viruela. | es-ES |
