| dc.description | This paper examines the Pacific Rim as a field of new possible insights for the Latin-American historiography. We contextualize our analysis vis-à-vis the renewed commercial and academic interest on the region and bring to the fore an alternative perspective to the economic-minded narratives on the region. Through three case studies (The Manila Galleon, the Empire of Japan’s foreign policies during World War II, and reflections about the Asian factor in contemporary Latin American culture), this paper takes on the question of the historiographical usefulness of transpacific studies for Latin-American studies. The paper concludes that thinking about and through the Pacific provides a fresh look into various aspects of the Americas’ economic, political and cultural history; aspects that otherwise would be invisible, and thus, enriches our knowledge on the region.Keywords: Transpacific Studies, Latin American Studies, Historiography, Asia, Methodology | en-US |
| dc.description | Este ensayo reflexiona sobre la cuenca del Pacífico en cuanto campo de posibilidades para la historiografía latinoamericana. Nuestras observaciones se posicionan en contraste al renovado interés por la región como consecuencia del mayor intercambio económico, y proponemos una alternativa a los relatos economicistas de la región desde la historia. A través de tres casos de estudio —la experiencia del Galeón de Manila, la política exterior del Imperio del Japón hacia el Pacífico occidental durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la reflexión sobre lo asiático en manifestaciones de la cultura latinoamericana contemporánea— se aborda aquí la pregunta sobre la utilidad historiográfica de los estudios transpacíficos para los estudios latinoamericanos. Así, se propone que el pensar sobre y a través del Pacífico lleva a la consideración de aspectos de la historia económica, política cultural que de otra manera son invisibles, destacando así la relevancia de lo transpacífico para los estudios latinoamericanos.Palabras clave: estudios transpacíficos, estudios latinoamericanos, historiografía, Asia, metodología. | es-ES |
