| dc.description | Between 1599 and 1643 five Dutch expeditions approached the Chilean coast for commercial reasons. Among their accounts there are common ideas about the fertility of the territory, the courage of its inhabitants and the horrific tyranny to which Spain subjected them. Based on Benjamin Schmidt’s innovative study, we analyze how, in addition to commercial interests, there were ideas about a project for the liberation of America. This is an idealized representation, but it shows that the construction of the European image of the “New World” and of Chile in particular was much more diverse and complex than is usually considered. Analyzing the complex cultural relationship —real and imaginary— between Europe and America is fundamental to understanding and questioning our own identity in the present.Keywords: Dutch expeditions, Chile, Travel Representations, Imaginaries, 17th Century. | en-US |
| dc.description | Entre 1599 y 1643 cinco expediciones holandesas se aproximaron a las costas de Chile con motivos comerciales. Existe entre sus relatos ideas comunes en torno a la fertilidad del territorio, la valentía de sus habitantes y la horrorosa tiranía a la que España los sometía. Basándonos en el innovador estudio de Benjamin Schmidt, analizamos cómo, además de intereses comerciales, existieron ideas sobre un proyecto de liberación de América. Se trata de una representación idealizada, pero que da cuenta que la construcción de la imagen europea del “Nuevo Mundo” y de Chile en particular fue mucho más diversa y compleja de lo que se suele plantear.
