| dc.description | In this article, we study the modernization of Rapa Nui during the last half century and addresses some of its consequences to date, when environmental and demographic pressures reveal the limits of this process. We analyze demographic changes from a broad temporal perspective, focusing especially on the period 1966-2017, when the island experienced rapid population growth. This is explained by the considerable flow of continental people that settle in the island and find jobs in State services, public investments and particularly in the development of infrastructure and tourism services. We demonstrate that the Rapa Nui people have substantial presence in public employment and in tourism as well as considerable influence and control of the place’s two main sources of income, respectively. | en-US |
| dc.description | Este artículo aborda la modernización de Rapa Nui durante el último medio siglo y se pronuncia acerca de algunas de sus consecuencias, hasta el presente en que presiones ambientales y demográficas ponen de manifiesto los límites del proceso. Se analizan los cambios demográficos, considerando una perspectiva temporal amplia y, en especial, el periodo 1966-2017, durante el cual se verifica un rápido crecimiento de población en la isla. Ello se explica por el considerable flujo de continentales que se radican, encontrando empleos en los servicios del Estado, las inversiones públicas y, sobre todo, en el desarrollo de infraestructura y servicios para el turismo. Se constata que en el empleo público y en el turismo los rapanui han llegado a tener una sustancial presencia, unido a una considerable influencia, en el primer caso, y control, en el segundo, de las dos principales fuentes de ingresos del lugar. | es-ES |
