Este artículo ahonda en los planteamientos formulados en otro anterior (Otero, 2006) el cual, apoyándose en la literatura pertinente entre 1983 y 2004, sostenía que el estudio de los fenómenos de la comunicación constituye un conjunto intelectual disperso, una multiplicidad de puntos de vista que no conversan entre sí y que cultivan la mutua ignorancia. En la búsqueda de una explicación, se acudía a la distinción entre ciencias paradigmáticas y pre-paradigmáticas, desarrollada por Thomas S. Kuhn, argumento que calza adecuadamente con la condición de un ámbito inmaduro de investigación. Para el presente trabajo se examinaron artículos publicados en revistas de comunicación entre 2005 y 2010, con el objeto de verificar si la tesis de la fragmentación de los estudios continúa siendo considerada un hecho básico. Los antecedentes recientes convergen en el diagnóstico de fragmentación y se asume una explicación de ella en función de la distinción entre entidad institucional o administrativa y entidad intelectual, tal como es formulada por el investigador estadounidense John D. PetersThis article examines in greater depth the ideas put forward in an earlier study (Otero, 2006) which, based on relevant literature published from 1983to 2004, maintained that communications and media studies constitute a fragmented and scattered set, a multiplicity of points of view that do not talkto each other and insist on ignoring and excluding each other. In an attempt to explain this fact, the distinction between paradigmatic and pre-paradigmatic sciences developed by the philosopher Thomas S. Kuhn was used. Taking into account the present state of communication theory studies, this argument adequately describes the immature state of this area of research. In this article, new records from communication journals published from 2005 to 2010 are used in an attempt to verify whether the fragmentation theory still applies. Facts obtained from this analysis are consistent with the fragmentation diagnosis. The study attempts to explain this finding in terms of the difference between an institutional or administrative entity and an intellectual entity as formulated by the American researcher John D. Peters.
