Este artículo busca identificar y describir el imaginario de país que propusieron los Presidentes chilenos Ricardo Lagos y Sebastián Piñera en sus primeros mensajes del 21 de mayo, además de establecer las similitudes y diferencias entre ambos. Con el fin de efectuar esta comparación, se tomó la relación que sugiere George Lakoff entre padres protectores/liberales y padres estrictos/conservadores. Para el reconocimiento del imaginario país que cada uno postula, se recurrió a la gramática narrativa de Algirdas Greimas. La teoría de Lakoff en torno a los marcos de sentido, por otra parte, fue empleada para analizar las cosmovisiones bajo las cuales se articulan ambos mensajes. Los resultados permiten observar que entre ambos gobernantes hay diversas similitudes y pocas diferencias. Mientras Lagos, como podría esperarse, cumple con la mayoría de los rasgos de un político progresista, en el caso de Piñera ocurre lo mismoThis article aims to identify and describe the notion of country proposed by Presidents Ricardo Lagos and Sebastián Piñera in their first State ofthe Union messages in May 21st, besides of establishing the similaritiesand differences between both. With the idea of building this comparison,the relationship between protector fathers/liberals and strict father/ conservatives suggested by George Lakoff was taken into account. AlgirdasGreimas’ narrative grammar was used to recognize the notion of country that each President depicts. Lakoff’s frame theory, on the other hand,constitutes the alternative chosen to analyze the worldviews conveyed in each message. The results show various correspondences and few betweeneach Head of State. While Lagos, as it may be assumed, presents most of the traits of a liberal politician, the same can be said about Piñera.
