This paper describes and critically analyzes the institutional design and the role of the Armed Forces and Order and Public Security Forces, established by the 1980 Constitution, in light of the constitutional process that Chile is experiencing. First, it analyzes the "Power of Security" and the normative autonomy recognized to them, verifying the elements that are maintained in the current Constitution. Second, based on a prospective review of six subjects related to the functions of the armed forces, the text concludes the need to remove from the Constitution a series of elements, with the aim of strengthening the democratic subordination of the military and police.El texto describe y analiza críticamente el diseño institucional y el rol de las Fuerzas Armadas y las Fuerzas de Orden y Seguridad Pública establecido por la Constitución de 1980, de cara al proceso constituyente que experimenta el país. Primero, se refiere al “Poder de Seguridad” y la autonomía normativa reconocida a éstas, verificando los elementos que se mantienen en la actual Constitución. En segundo lugar, a partir de una revisión prospectiva de seis materias relacionadas con las funciones de los cuerpos armados, el texto concluye con la necesidad de desconstitucionalizar una serie de elementos, con la finalidad de fortalecer la subordinación democrática de los militares y las policías.
