Overload and perceived health in informal caregivers of patients with mental illness

dc.descriptionThe mental illness can cause the person suffering from it a great dependence, preventing him from continuing autonomously with his life and provoking the need for help and care from other people. This care is assumed primarily by a close family member who is usually a woman and mother of the affected person. This situation causes an overload in the caregiver. The objective of the study is to know the level of overload and perceived health of a sample of 30 caregivers of people with severe mental deterioration and to check if there are differences, with respect to a series of variables such as the external support received, the help services used , the time and degree of dependence of the person cared for, among others. To evaluate the perceived health, the Goldberg General Health Questionnaire was used; the Overload Scale of the caregiver of Zarit is used; and the Lawton and Brody Scale for the instrumental activities of daily life. The results show that more than half of the caregivers in the sample did not show perception of overload; however, the majority did claim to have perceived poor general health. Higher levels of overload correspond to the worst health perceptions.en-US
dc.descriptionLa enfermedad mental puede provocar a la persona que la padece una gran dependencia, impidiéndole continuar de forma autónoma con su vida y provocándole la necesidad de ayuda y cuidados por parte de otras personas. Este cuidado es asumido de forma principal por un familiar próximo que generalmente es mujer y madre del afectado/a. Esta situación provoca en la cuidadora una sobrecarga. El objetivo del estudio es conocer el nivel de sobrecarga y de salud percibida de una muestra de 30 cuidadores de personas con deterioro mental grave y comprobar si existen diferencias, con respecto a una serie de variables como el apoyo externo recibido, los servicios de ayuda utilizados, el tiempo y grado de dependencia de la persona cuidada, entre otras. Para evaluar la salud percibida se ha utilizado el Cuestionario de Salud General de Goldberg; se emplea la Escala de Sobrecarga del cuidador de Zarit; y la Escala de Lawton y Brody para las actividades instrumentales de la vida diaria. Los resultados evidencian que más de la mitad de los cuidadores de la muestra no manifestaron percepción de sobrecarga; sin embargo, la mayoría sí afirmaron tener una mala salud general percibida. Los niveles más altos de sobrecarga se corresponden con las peores percepciones de salud.es-ES
