dc.descriptionIn 1993, a group of professionals gathered with the purpose of developing a cartographic model for blind people. This began at Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana (UTEM for its acronym in spanish) and subsequently was supported by the pan American Institute of Geography and History. The utem's cherished dream of creating the center of tactile cartography-UTEMconsolidated in 2003, with the sponsorship of the Organization of American States (OAS). The center's main theme has been visual disability and the study of tactile cartography. An in-depth study of this experience has allowed us to understand that maps are a type of instrument that allows another form of "seeing the world."  Touch becomes an effective instrument to interact with the environment and with the beings and objects in it. This is what we propose as an educational possibility not only for blind or low-vision girls and boys.  We believe that if the educational system gave the sense of touch the importance it deserves, it would contribute to forming people with greater awareness of their environmental and sociocultural responsibilities, and also encourage, a more sustainable education, with a greater emphasis on human relations. en-US
dc.descriptionEn 1993, un grupo de profesionales nos reunimos con el propósito de desarrollar un modelo cartográfico para las personas con ceguera. Esto se inició en la Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana y, posteriormente, recibió el apoyo del Instituto Panamericano de Geografía e Historia. En el año 2003, con el patrocinio de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), se consolidó un anhelado sueño: crear el Centro de Cartografía Táctilutem. La temática principal ha sido la discapacidad visual y su estudio en el área de la cartografía táctil. Profundizar en esta experiencia nos ha permitido entender que los mapas son un tipo de instrumento que permite otra forma «de ver el mundo». El tacto se vuelve un instrumento eficaz para involucrarse con el entorno y con los seres y objetos que lo habitan. Esto lo proponemos como una posibilidad que afecta no exclusivamente a las niñas y niños con ceguera o poca visión. Creemos que si el sistema educativo diera la importancia que se merece al sentido del tacto, este podría influir en la formación de personas más conscientes de su responsabilidad medioambiental y sociocultural, incentivando además, una formación más sustentable y con mayor énfasis en las relaciones humanas.es-ES
