dc.descriptionThe present research tries to explain the motives that led to the initiation of the struggle for the rights of American Indians. Because of economic as well as legal reasons the King and the Queen of Spain tried to stop the genocide of the natives, introducing the Indians in Christian society. The article revisits the Antilles and the Indian uprising of Puerto Rico in 1511. It describes how important the Encomienda system became for the survival of the Spanish colony. It also narrates how the Domenican friars put the cornerstone of the defence of the Indians before Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas made his first steps, the fist effects of their work were the so called Leyes de Burgos of 1512 and its Moderation of 1513.en-US
dc.descriptionEl trabajo presente busca conocer la génesis de la lucha por los derechos de los naturales en América. Explica cómo los reyes de España, sea tanto por razones jurídicas como de carácter económico, intentaron frenar la desaparición de los naturales y su incorporación a la sociedad cristiana. Se toma en cuenta la situación político-militar de las Antillas españolas, la rebelión de los indios borincanos y la necesidad de mantener la encomienda para la supervivencia del poblamiento castellano. El trabajo explica cómo las Leyes de Burgos de 1512 y la Moderación de 1513 fueron resultado del inicio de la lucha por los derechos de los indios emprendida por los dominicos en el Nuevo Mundo antes de fray Bartolomé de Las Casas. Asimismo, se pone en evidencia cómo afectaron a su redacción la lucha entre la Corona y los herederos de Cristóbal Colón por el dominio y gobierno de las islas.es-ES
