The performance of the Senates in bicameral parliaments of the world is analyzed, especially considering the more traditional functions that are attributed to them, to then carry out the same analysis with respect to the Chilean Senate throughout its republican history. It seeks to explain if the Senates are really useful, to finally determine whether in a newConstitution the Chilean Congress should or should not be bicameral.Se analiza el desempeño de los senados en varios parlamentos bicamerales del mundo, considerando en especial las funciones más tradicionales que les son atribuidas, para luego efectuar el mismo análisis respecto del Senado chileno a lo largo de su historia republicana. Se busca explicar si realmente son útiles los senados, para finalmente, en el contexto del nuevo proceso constituyente, determinar si el Congreso chileno debe o no seguir siendo bicameral.
