dc.descriptionSeen in 1959 as an additional piece within the larger democratization process in Latin America, the Cuban Revolution arose general enthusiasm within the Chilean Christian Democratic Party (PDC). But its unanimous acceptation declined in the coming years because of the Cuban authorities’ decision to radicalize their revolution and establish an alliance with the Soviet Union, although not all Christian Democrats turned away from the Island. With the beginning Eduardo Frei Montalva’s presidential term in 1964, his “Revolution in Liberty” was showcased as an alternative agenda to the radical Cuban path, which engendered concerns in La Habana. Forced to take sides, some Christian Democrats defied Frei’s political line and brandished a more determined and transformative route, vindicating the Cuban example. Debates regarding the appropriateness of Castro’s model crystallized inner tensions within the PDC and the announced the rupture that would follow. We claim that through a global and connected approach we can better seize the complex articulation of local transformations and international influences that shaped this process of seduction and ruptures.en-US
dc.descriptionLa Revolución cubana, percibida en 1959 como un eslabón más de un proceso de democratización en América Latina, suscitó entusiasmo en el Partido Demócrata Cristiano (PDC) de Chile. La aceptación unánime del desenlace revolucionario se resquebrajó en la medida en que el gobierno castrista se radicalizaba y montaba una alianza con la URSS, aunque no todos los militantes democratacristianos se distanciaron de la Isla. Con la llegada de Eduardo Frei Montalva al poder en 1964, su “Revolución en Libertad” fue presentada como un proyecto rival al camino más radical del castrismo, lo que produjo seria inquietud en La Habana. Obligados a tomar partido, algunos democratacristianos desafiaron a la oficialidad del PDC y abogaron por una vía transformadora menos timorata, reivindicando el ejemplo cubano. Estas tensiones en torno al carácter ejemplificador del castrismo cristalizaban las agudas tensiones internas, mientras anunciaban la posterior ruptura que desmembraría al PDC. Sostenemos que una historia transnacional y conectada nos ofrece un apropiado ángulo de análisis para discernir la compleja articulación entre transformaciones locales e influjos internacionales que determinó estos procesos.es-ES
