dc.descriptionColonia Dignidad is usually associated with the period of the military dictatorship and the subsequent era of democratic governments. In this article, however, we analyze the origins of Colonia Dignidad dating back to its establishment in Chile in 1961. Based on German and Chilean documentary sources, we argue that the drastic isolation of the Colonia and its regime of the forced seclusion of its members, led to the development of a sectarian community. The escape of an underage youth, in 1966, demonstrates that the systematic violation of human rights was a constitutive element of the enclave controlled by Paul Schäfer from its very beginning. Additionally, we study how the Colonia Dignidad phenomena interacted with the German and Chilean states and from the perspective of the historical period in which it emerged.en-US
dc.descriptionSe suele asociar a Colonia Dignidad con el período de la dictadura militar, así como con los gobiernos democráticos posteriores. En este artículo se analizan, en cambio, los orígenes de Dignidad desde su establecimiento en Chile el año 1961. Se sostiene, sobre la base de fuentes documentales alemanas y chilenas, que el drástico aislamiento de la Colonia, así como el régimen de encierro forzado al que se sometió a sus miembros, obedecieron a la constitución de una comunidad de tipo sectaria. La fuga de un menor de edad el año 1966, evidencia que las graves y sistemáticas vulneraciones a los derechos de las personas fueron un elemento constitutivo del enclave controlado por Paul Schäfer desde el mismo origen. El fenómeno Dignidad se aborda asimismo desde la perspectiva de su interacción con los estados alemán y chileno, y desde el punto de vista de la época en la que se sitúan sus inicios.es-ES
