This article aims to trace ñidol-lonko (great cacique) Juan Lorenzo Kolüpi, from his appearance in military records during the Guerra a Muerte (1819) until his death in 1850. The underlying objective is to understand the operation of Mapuche politics during the first half of the nineteenth century, starting from an analysis of his particular characteristics and those he shared with his peers. Focusing on important events he experienced, we realized that his power was built in a war-like scenario that linked the Mapuche society’s internal conflicts with Spanish-Chilean military divisions. In this context, Kolüpi’s actions were effective and valid. However, these properties weakened during his last years, to the point where he became an inconvenient actor for much of the present concerns at the border.El presente artículo se propone trazar la trayectoria del ñidol-lonko (gran cacique) Juan Lorenzo Kolüpi, desde su irrupción en la documentación militar de la “Guerra a Muerte” (1819) hasta su muerte en 1850. El objetivo de fondo es comprender el funcionamiento de la política mapuche de la primera mitad del siglo XIX, a partir de un análisis de los rasgos particulares del personaje y de aquellos que comparte con sus pares. Poniendo el foco sobre algunos episodios importantes por los que pasó, nos damos cuenta de que su poder se construyó en un escenario guerrero que vinculaba los conflictos internos de la sociedad mapuche con las divisiones militares hispano-chilenas. Ese contexto dotó de eficacia y vigencia a Kolüpi. Sin embargo, dichas propiedades fueron debilitándose en sus últimos años, al punto de tornarse en un actor inconveniente para buena parte de los intereses presentes en la frontera.
