dc.descriptionThis paper studies the evolution of the political participation of engineers in key positions of the State (ministries, parliament, intendances) in Republican Chile between 1810 and 1973. Based on sources of sessions of the Congress, the Annals of the Institute of Engineers, the digital repository of CORFO, the Armando de Ramón Biographical Catalog and the parliamentary information of the National Congress Library (BCN). The paper shows how the participation of engineers in the powers of the State, which begins early and is institutionalized towards the end of the 19th century, correlates with the development of engineering in Chile, with the increasing “technification” of parliamentary and governmental activity and the type of government. This involvement, although small in percentage and restricted to a elite, is part of the increasing power that engineers are taking in different spheres of the country. The variations along the period studied show different ways of influence in State affairs, either from the State powers, when they gave them confidence, or from their private organizations and spaces of influence otherwise.Keywords: Engineering, Technocracy, Politics, Chile, XIX-XX centuries.en-US
dc.descriptionSe estudia la evolución de la participación política de ingenieros en puestos claves del Estado (ministerios, parlamento, intendencias) en el Chile republicano entre 1810 y 1973. Se basa en fuentes de sesiones del Congreso, Anales del Instituto de Ingenieros, repositorio digital de CORFO, Catálogo Biográfico de Armando de Ramón y la información parlamentaria de la Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional (BCN). Se muestra cómo la participación de ingenieros en los poderes del Estado, que comienza temprana mente y se institucionaliza hacia fines del siglo XIX, se correlaciona con el desarrollo de la ingeniería en Chile, con la creciente “tecnificación” de la actividad parlamentaria y gubernamental y el tipo de gobierno. Este involucramiento, aunque pequeño en porcentaje y restringido a una elite, es parte del creciente poder que van tomando los ingenieros en diferentes ámbitos en el país. Las variaciones de esa participación a lo largo del período estudiado muestran diferentes formas de influencia en los asun- tos de Estado, ya sea desde los poderes del Estado cuando éstos les daban confianza, o desde sus organizaciones y espacios privados de influencia en caso contrario.Palabras clave: Ingeniería, Tecnocracia, Política, Chile, siglos XIX-XXes-ES
