The notion of “sacrifice zone” is an interesting theoretical category to address the new face-forms of inequalities caused by socio-environmental disasters such as the one we observed in Nonogasta (northwestern Argentina), where a leather industry is producing a real socio-environmental tragedy. As a “witness case”, in that community, and in a double movement of modern institutions, the sacrifice and suffering of the inhabitants and territory are legitimized, while they are made invisible. We appeal to critical thinking to address this category, inscribing it in the global-extraterritorial and institutional logics that, in Nonogasta, are expressed in the invisibility of the suffering of its inhabitants and territory, as happens in other places in the Global South, where we locate Latin America. From critical thinking, we propose to extend the notion of “sacrifice zones”, reinterpreting it from the logics of invisibility of sacrifice and contested by the resistance of local inhabitants.La noción de “zona de sacrificio” es una interesante categoría teórica para abordar las nuevas formas-rostros de desigualdades causadas por los desastres socioambientales, como el que observamos en Nonogasta (noroeste argentino), donde una industria curtidora de cueros está produciendo una verdadera tragedia socioambiental. A modo de “caso testigo”, en esa comunidad, y en un doble movimiento de las instituciones modernas, el sacrificio y sufrimiento de los habitantes y territorio se legitima, al tiempo que se invisibiliza. Apelamos al pensamiento crítico para pensar esta categoría, inscribiéndola en las lógicas globales-extraterritoriales e institucionales que, en Nonogasta, se expresan en la invisibilización del sufrimiento de sus habitantes y su territorio, como sucede en otros lugares del Sur Global, donde ubicamos a Latinoamérica. Desde el pensamiento crítico, proponemos extender la noción de “zonas de sacrificio”, reinterpretándola desde las lógicas de invisibilización del sacrificio y contestada por las resistencias de los habitantes locales.
