State and Science: the Case of the Liberal Historiography (Chile, XIX century)

| dc.description | Diego Barros Arana, Miguel Luis Amunátegui and Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna represent the beginning of national historiography. With them, the ambiguous and dispersed character of historic studies became in a modern and professional science. They refused the possibility of philosophical speculation about human history, renewing the studies about the past by a rigorous and neutral review of documents. Any other intelectual aspiration might wait. However, this strictly scientific motivation also included the postulates of their liberalism ideology. Therefore, the history of Chile was transformed in a confuse issue which included both the historical sources and also the European ideology of the universal history, as we can appreciate in the role of State in the narration. | dc.description | Diego Barros Arana, Miguel Luís Amunátegui y Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, constituyen el origen de la historiografía nacional. Transforman lo que antes era una disciplina dispersa y ambigua, en una ciencia profesional y moderna. Rechazaron la especulación filosófica en torno a las causas primeras y últimas del devenir humano renovando los estudios del pasado por medio de un examen riguroso y desinteresado de documentos. Toda pretensión ajena a esta tarea, debía esperar. Sin embargo, esta pretensión meramente científica no estuvo exenta de los impulsos propios del liberalismo predominante en los tres autores. El resultado fue que la historia de Chile se transformó en una materia ambigua entre lo que desprendían las fuentes y el entendimiento liberal europeo en torno a la historia universal, como es posible apreciar en el rol del Estado en el relato. La meta del presente artículo es profundizar en las principales obras de los tres autores considerando estos dos ejes. | es-ES |
