This article emerges from the goal of questioning the meaning of urban sustainability while revealing the conceptual boundaries among three related concepts: development, growth, and the sustainable. These three concepts interplay to make up the urban, which is useful for the conceptual phrasing of the city’s sustained urban development. Thus, and resorting to epistemology, philosophical tenets, and a critique to the definition of urban sustainability, the conclusions is the need to differentiate two concepts: sustained urban development –elaborated in this article– and the city’s controlled growth. The first concept is analyzed by breaking it up in two fundamental parts, namely: infrastructure –made up by society and human beings– and a superstructure, which is the city itself.El presente artículo parte del objetivo de cuestionar el significado de sostenibilidad urbana y demostrar las fronteras conceptuales que existen entre tres conceptos asociados entre sí: el desarrollo, el crecimiento y lo sostenible. Estos tres conceptos interactúan para conformar lo urbano que sirve para formular conceptualmente el desarrollo urbano sostenido de la ciudad. De este modo, haciendo uso de la epistemología, postulados de filosofía y una crítica a la definición de sostenibilidad urbana se llega a la conclusión de que existen dos conceptos a diferenciar: el desarrollo urbano sostenido –elaborado en el presente ensayo– y el crecimiento controlado de la ciudad. El primero de ellos se analiza descomponiéndolo en dos partes fundamentales que son su infraestructura –conformada por la sociedad y el ser humano– y una supraestructura –que es la ciudad en sí misma.
