Many of the criticisms that are made of capitalism in Chile, focus on generalities that do not offer the minimally necessary details. This article tries to determine what is the attribute that defines modern capitalism. To do this, the studies carried out on the “spirit” of capitalism by Werner Sombart, Max Weber, Albert Hirschman, Luc Boltanski, Eve Chiapello, Julio Meinvielle and André Piettre. Brief references to Karl Max are included. It is still early, however, to grasp from a unitary nucleus the most advanced tendencies of 21st century capitalism.Muchas de las críticas que, en Chile, se realizan al capitalismo se centran en generalidades que no ofrecen las precisiones mínimamente necesarias. En este artículo se intenta determinar cuál es el atributo que define el capitalismo moderno. Para ello se revisan los estudios que sobre el “espíritu” del capitalismo realizaron Werner Sombart, Max Weber, Albert Hirschman, Luc Boltanski, Eve Chiapello, Julio Meinvielle y André Piettre. Se incluyen breves referencias a Karl Max. Aún es temprano, sin embargo, para captar a partir de un núcleo unitario las tendencias más avanzadas del capitalismo del siglo xxi.
