| dc.description | The catholic shrine dedicated to Virgin Mary on the summit of the hill of Verdun has been the most important place of pilgrimage in Uruguay for more than one hundred years. Thousands of devotees gather there annually for special patriotic occasions. This paper documents and analyzes the diversity of beliefs and ritual practices associated with the hill of Verdun. Field ascents and informal interviews have been undertaken to broaden the understanding of the Verdun hill, not only as a centenary catholic shrine, but also in the context of an increasing visibility that the sacred dimension of mountains is currently acquiring in Uruguay. | en-US |
| dc.description | Desde hace más de un siglo, el santuario mariano en las alturas del cerro Verdún constituye el más importante centro de peregrinaje religioso de Uruguay. Es visitado por multitudes en ocasión de celebraciones anuales de carácter patrio. El presente trabajo tiene por objeto documentar la diversidad de creencias y prácticas rituales asociadas a dicha colina, que incluyen peregrinajes realizados por diversidad de motivos individuales y familiares. A través de ascensiones y entrevistas informales, se procura ampliar la comprensión del cerro Verdún, no solo como santuario mariano de antigüedad centenaria, sino también en el contexto de la creciente visibilidad que la dimensión simbólica de la montaña está adquiriendo actualmente en Uruguay. | es-ES |
