This article explores the problem of housing and urbanization in the municipality of Conchalí, during its first five years of existence. Located in the north of Santiago, Chile, this area has been the object of a massive formation of slums since the 1910s. That was the reason of its constitution as a municipality (local council) within the administrative reform carried out by the Carlos Ibáñez dictatorship (1927-1931). Thus, the local government has been faced with the challenges of suburban development in infrastructure (streets, roads) and basic services (lighting, drinking water, etc.). Through an urban history approach, we will research the informal urbanization process and the role of the municipality to face this situation. Using the Intendencia de Santiago (provincial gobernment) archive and press sources, we will analyze life conditions in some shantytowns made up of “mejoreros” and buyers of long-term sites, characterized by self-construction and poor sanitary conditions. The article contributes to broadening the field of knowledge about the past of the city’s borders and its own history, helping to link the local process of land occupation with peripheral growth.Keywords: Santiago de Chile, municipality of Conchalí, housing problem, urbanization, social actors.Este artículo aborda el problema de la vivienda y la urbanización en la comuna de Conchalí, durante su primer lustro de existencia. Ubicada al norte de Santiago, este sector fue objeto de una masiva formación de poblaciones desde la década de 1910. Dicho escenario llevó a su constitución como municipalidad en el marco de la reforma administrativa realizada por la dictadura de Carlos Ibáñez (1927-1931). Desde entonces, el gobierno local se vio enfrentado a los desafíos del desarrollo suburbano en infraestructura (calles, caminos) y servicios básicos (alumbrado, agua potable, etc.). Mediante un enfoque de historia urbana, indagaremos en el proceso de urbanización informal y en el rol del municipio para enfrentar esta situación. Utilizando el fondo Intendencia de Santiago y fuentes de prensa, analizaremos las condiciones de vida en algunas poblaciones formadas por “mejoreros” y compradores de sitios a plazo, marcadas por la autoconstrucción y precarias condiciones sanitarias. El artículo contribuye a ampliar el campo de conocimiento sobre el pasado de los márgenes de la ciudad y de su propia historia, aportando a vincular el proceso local de ocupación del suelo con el crecimiento periférico.Palabras clave: Santiago de Chile, municipalidad de Conchalí, problema de la vivienda, urbanización, actores sociales.
