| dc.description | In this paper, we discuss the images included in the Libellus de medicinalibus indorum herbis, a manuscript produced in New Spain in 1552. Considered as an indigenous object, we analyze the general disposition of the material object, the relation between texts and images, and the visual representation of the medical herbs and their roots. The characterization of the figurative solutions present in these images sustains their portrayal as a visual discourse that appropriates and translates a vast and diverse set of techniques, forms and types of signs, in order to present the Mexican medical matter from an authorized indigenous point of view. It is by this means that they dialogue with the Mesoamerican cultural horizon and its understanding of the vertical structure of the cosmos and the balance of elements.Keywords: Indigenous agency, image, appropriation, Mexican medical matter | en-US |
| dc.description | Este artículo propone una lectura de las imágenes presentes en el Libellus de medicinalibus indorum herbis, un manuscrito producido en Nueva España en 1552. A partir de la caracterización del Libellus como objeto indígena, se analiza la disposición general del manuscrito, la relación entre texto e imagen y la representación visual de las hierbas medicinales y sus raíces. La pregunta por las soluciones figurativas allí desplegadas permite reconocerlas como un discurso visual que se apropia y traduce un repertorio amplio y heterogéneo de técnicas, formas y tipologías de signos para presentar la materia médica mexicana desde una voz indígena autorizada; una voz que dialoga con el horizonte cultural mesoamericano en torno a la noción de estructuración vertical del cosmos y el equilibrio entre componentes.Palabras clave: Agencia indígena, imagen, apropiación, materia médica mexicana | es-ES |
