How do boys and girls respond to books about death? Analysis of reading responses of kindergarten to 4th grade students to the picture book Frog and the birdsong

dc.descriptionIn recent years, complex themes have been incorporated intochildren's literature. Topics such as death, parental separation orsexual diversity, to name a few, were, until recently, forbidden byadults, who select what boys and girls should read. The purposeof this study is to analyze the reading responses to the picturebook Frog and the birdsong (1992). Twenty students from twoeducational establishments in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago,Chile, participated. They were asked to retell the story andto answer questions on their interpretation of the book. An analysisof the textual content of the reading responses was carried outfrom a qualitative methodological approach. The results showedthat the older the schoolchildren, the greater capacity to refer todeath. At least two stages were detected in the understanding ofthe phenomenon: death as a reversible process (in the youngest)and death as an irreversible event (in the oldest). At the sametime, the children's understanding of the text is mediated by imagesof an empathic nature with warm colors. This helped readersrefer to the subject of the text with ideas that are more relatedto love, family, friends and less to situations surrounding deathsuch as illness, accidents, and burial.en-US
dc.descriptionEn los últimos años se han incorporado en la producción literaria infantil temas complejos y hasta hace poco vedados por el mundo adulto que selecciona lo que los niños y las niñas han de leer; temas como la muerte, la separación de los padres o la diversidad sexual, entre otros. Este estudio tiene por finalidad reportar el análisis de respuestas lectoras de escolares de kí­nder a 4° año básico al libro álbum Sapo y la Canción del Mirlo (1992). Los participantes fueron 20 estudiantes de dos establecimientos educativos de la Región Metropolitana de Santiago, Chile, a los que se les aplicó una tarea de recontado y preguntas de interpretación a partir de la obra. Desde una aproximación metodológica cualitativa, se realizó un análisis del contenido textual de las respuestas lectoras. Los resultados permiten afirmar que a mayor edad los escolares cuentan con más distinciones para referir la muerte; se detectan, al menos, dos etapas en la comprensión del fenómeno: la muerte como proceso reversible (en los más pequeños) y la muerte como suceso irreversible (en los más grandes). A su vez, la comprensión del texto está mediada por las imágenes de carácter empático y en colores cálidos, lo que contribuye a que las y los lectores refieran como tema de la obra ideas más vinculadas al amor, la familia, los amigos y menos a situaciones que rodean la muerte como la enfermedad, los accidentes  es-ES
