dc.descriptionTherapeutic hypothermia (TH) has been the standard treatment for neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic En- cephalopathy (HIE) for more than a decade. This therapy has been one of the best studied treatments in neonatal medicine, moving from preclinical models to patient application. Its implementation has been accompanied by the development of neuromonitoring, neonatal neurology as a specific area of expertise, and the intense search for new neuroprotective strategies. This article provides an update on the clinical scope of this therapy, with emphasis on the problems of our geographic region. In addition, some additional strategies that can improve the therapeutic efficacy of TH are reviewed, as well as controversial aspects in its application and some future perspectives in the care of neonates with HIE.en-US
dc.descriptionLa hipotermia terapéutica (HT) es el tratamiento estándar de la Encefalopatía Hipóxico-Isqué- mica (EHI) neonatal desde hace más de una década. Esta terapia ha sido uno de los tratamientos mejor estudiados en la medicina neonatal, pasando desde modelos preclínicos a la aplicación en el paciente. Su implementación se ha acompañado del desarrollo de la neuromonitorización, la neurología neonatal como un área de conocimiento específico y de la intensa búsqueda de nuevas estrategias neuroprotectoras. Este artículo ofrece una actualización en los alcances clínicos de esta terapia, con énfasis en la problemática de nuestra región geográfica. Además, se revisan algunas estrategias adicionales que pueden mejorar la eficacia terapéutica de la HT, así como los aspectos controvertidos en su aplicación y algunas perspectivas de futuro en la atención de los neonatos con EHI.es-ES
