The field verification of ancient cultivation fields, probably dating back to pre-Hispanic times, carried out by a group of researchers from the Institute of Geography of the Catholic University of Chile, in the Pampa del Tamarugal in front of the Tarapacá and Quipisca ravines, opens interesting agricultural perspectives for the Department of Iquique. Indeed, if we consider that the ancient inhabitants of the region, with little technical knowledge and rudimentary tools, were able to cultivate, perhaps for centuries, extensive fields in currently desert areas, we can only consider the possibility that modern man, with the help of modern techniques and machinery, will be able not only to rehabilitate the land formerly cultivated, but also to obtain from it better products and an adequate economic yield that will mean a real contribution to regional development. Since water is the fundamental factor in all human activity, it is essential to analyze the conditions in which this resource was found in the past and in which it is found today. La constatación en terreno de antiguos campos de cultivo, que datan, probablemente, de la época pre-hispánica, realizada por un grupo de investigadores del Instituto de Geografía de la Universidad Católica de Chile, en la Pampa del Tamarugal frente a las quebradas de Tarapacá y Quipisca, abre interesantes perspectivas agrícolas para el Departamento de lquique. En efecto si se considera que los antiguos habitantes de la región con escasos conocimientos técnicos y rudimentarias herramientas fueron capaces de cultivar, tal vez por siglos, extensos campos en zonas actualmente desérticas, no puede menos que considerarse la posibilidad de que el hombre actual, con la ayuda de las técnicas y maquinarias modernas, sea capaz no sólo de rehabilitar los terrenos antiguamente cultivados, sino también, obtener de ellos mejores productos y un rendimiento económico adecuado que signifique un real aporte al desarrollo regional. Siendo el agua el factor fundamental de toda actividad humana es indispensable analizar las condiciones en que se encontraba este recurso en épocas pasadas y en las que se encuentra en la actualidad.
