dc.descriptionAfter providing some background on Arica in the colonial period, the authors analyze the demographic development of the city from the War of Independence (1824) to the beginning of the Pacific War (1879). Demographic data from travelers and censuses are collected, and the causes of population decline (malaria, emigration, wars, etc.) are examined. The ethnic, occupational, educational and religious composition of the population, as expressed in the 1876 census, is analyzed in detail. It is concluded by pointing out the importance of the tertiary factor (commerce, transport and communications) in that Census, thus confirming the importance of Arica as a transit center. Agriculture and fishing are much less significant in the city's economy.en-US
dc.descriptionDespués de ofrecer algunos antecedentes sobre Arica en el período colonial, los autores analizan el desarrollo demográfico de la ciudad, desde la guerra de la Independencia (1824), hasta el inicio de la Guerra del Pacifico (1879). Se recogen los datos demográficos de viajeros y censos, y se examinan las causas de disminución de la población (malaria, emigración, guerras, etc.). La composición étnica, ocupacional, educacional y religiosa de la población, expresada en el censo de 1876, es analizada en detalle. Se concluye señalando la importancia del factor terciario (comercio, transporte y comunicaciones) en dicho Censo, por lo que se confirma la importancia de Arica como centro de tránsito. La agricultura y la pesca son mucho menos significativas en la economía de la ciudad.es-ES
