In a survey, university students in Santiago, Valparaíso and Valdivia were asked to rank Chile's provinces according to their preference for living in them. Three geographic distributions were identified using the principal component analysis technique. The first distribution was a strong preference for the provinces of Valparaíso, Concepción and Valdivia; the second emphasized the attraction of southern Chile and the third presented high values for the far north and south provinces. It is assumed that residential preferences influence migration and the distribution of economic activities, therefore regional development programs should take them into account.En una encuesta se les pidió a estudiantes universitarios en Santiago, Valparaíso y Valdivia que clasificaran las provincias de Chile según su preferencia para vivir en ellas. Se identificaron tres distribuciones geográficas usando la técnica de análisis de componentes principales. La primera distribución fue una marcada preferencia por las provincias de Valparaíso, Concepción y Valdivia; la segunda acentuó la atracción del sur de Chile y la tercera presentó valores altos en las provincias del extremo norte y sur. Se supone que las preferencias residenciales influyen sobre migración y la distribución de actividades económicas, por lo tanto los programas de desarrollo regional deberían de tomarlas en cuenta.
