dc.descriptionThe development and evolution of the various disciplines that have reached a high degree of conceptualization allows us to recognize within them certain types of orientations that are basically defined by the work of their practitioners. Within the cartographic discipline, the idea of recognizing only two types of charts by means of which the diverse phenomena that are susceptible of being mapped can be expressed has been gaining followers during the last three decades: these are the thematic charts and topographic charts. This recognition is based on a new conception of the discipline; in fact, Cartography is defined as an information system, where the means of expression and the way in which this information is delivered acquire special importance. This situation makes it possible to speak today of two cartographic trends, whose origin seems to go back to the very beginnings of the discipline. However, it is necessary to determine the moment in which both orientations define their identity; for it is important to take into account the valuation that three fundamental concepts have had in time: the content, the purpose and the means of expression used in the charts, which, in turn, determine in the present the current validity of the thematic and topographic trend within contemporary cartography, based on the diverse functions that they fulfill.en-US
dc.descriptionEl desarrollo y evolución de las diversas disciplinas que han alcanzado un alto grado de conceptualización permite que se puedan reconocer dentro de ellas cierto tipo de orientaciones que se definen básicamente por el quehacer de sus cultores. Dentro de lo disciplina cartográfica, ha venido ganando adeptos durante los tres últimos decenios la idea reconocer sólo dos tipos de cartas por medio de las cuales los diversos fenómenos que son susceptibles de ser cartografiados puedan expresarse: éstas son las cartas temáticas y los topográficas. Este reconocimiento está fundado en una nueva concepción de la disciplina; en el hecho, a la Cartografía se le define como un sistema de información, donde adquieren especial importancia los medios de expresión y el modo como se entrega dicha información. Esta situación permite hablar hoy en día de dos tendencias cartográficas, cuyo origen parece arrancar desde los inicios mismos de la disciplina. Sin embargo, se hace necesario determinar el momento en que ambas orientaciones definen su identidad; para ello es importante tener en cuenta lo valoración que en el tiempo han tenido tres conceptos fundamentales: el contenido, el propósito y los medios de expresión empleados en los cartas, los que, a su vez, determinan en el presente la actual vigencia de la tendencia temática y topográfica dentro de la cartografía contemporánea, en base a las diversa funciones que ellas cumplen.es-ES
