The rapid growth of the capital's population affected the different sectors of Greater Santiago in different ways. The notorious population decrease in the central sectors of the city has been counterbalanced by an extremely high growth in the number of inhabitants, especially in the periphery. In uptown areas, there has been a recent tendency to replace old family houses with apartment buildings. Thus, the construction boom of the early 1980s not only led to an expansion, but also to a partial structural change of preference in the residential neighborhoods. In contrast, the remaining urban areas represent a concrete manifestation of unresolved housing problems. Because the inhabitants of the slums are mostly young families still growing, there was a fairly high natural population increase. A comparatively high growth rate was also observed in some districts, which are analyzed in detail.El rápido crecimiento de la población capitalina afectó de diferente forma a los distintos sectores del Gran Santiago. A la notoria disminución poblacional en los sectores céntricos de la ciudad, se le contrapone un crecimiento del número de habitantes extremadamente alto, especialmente en la periferia. En sectores del barrio alto, últimamente existe la tendencia al reemplazo de antiguas casasfamiliares por edificios de departamentos. Por consiguiente, el "boom" de la construcción a principios de los años 80, no sólo provocó una expansión, sino que también significó un parcial cambio estructUral de preferencia en los barrios residenciales. Contrariamente, las áreas urbanas restantes representan una concreta manifestación de los problemas habitacionales no resueltos. Debido a que los habitantes de las poblaciones marginales son, en su mayoría, familias jóvenes todavía en crecimiento, se produjo un aumento poblacional natural bastante alto. Un alto crecimiento comparativo  mostraron también algunos distritos que son analizados en detalle.
