The work analyzes what is to be understood by the expression "the driest desert on earth", verifying, through comparison with other known deserts, the presence of two fundamental variables; the scarcity of precipitation and the magnitude of the daily temperature oscillation. In both variables, the author observes that the northern Chilean desert presents extreme conditions, even more acute than in the Sahara desert. He thus proves, using thermal and hygrometric criteria, that the central core of the Atacama Desert (and not the coast) is to be considered the "driest desert on earth". The paper also examines why coastal moisture from the Pacific Ocean, or from the eastern sector, fails to penetrate to the inner core of the Pampa. El trabajo analiza qué ha de entenderse por la expresión “el desierto más árido de la tierra”, verificando, mediante la comparación con otros desiertos conocidos, la presencia de dos variables fundamentales; la escasez de precipitación y la magnitud de la oscilación diaria de la temperatura. En ambas variables, observa el autor que el desierto norte chileno presenta condiciones extremas, aún más agudas que en el desierto del Sahara. Prueba, de este modo, mediante el uso de criterios térmicos e higrométricos, que le núcleo central del desierto de Atacama (y no la costa) ha de ser considerado como el “desierto más árido de la tierra”. El trabajo también examina por qué la humedad costera procedente del océano Pacífico, o del sector oriental, no logra penetrar hasta el núcleo interior de la Pampa.
