The authors in this article analyze the development of Chilean Geography, trying to make intelligible the formation and processes along its history. To obtain this object the article is based on modes and scopes in wich Chilean Geography is initÚlted, and the role of the Philosophy Faculties. Regarding modes and scopes, they study the begining of Geography in the elementary school and high school since first decade of the XIX centUry until the arriving of the Professor 8teffen at the University of Chile, including its contributions to the formation and training of school teachers. The same thing is done with the ingeneering geography career considering the military cartographers of the independence period until the foundation in 1853 of the university program and the contributions of geographers formes in that programo  The role of the Philosophy Faculties study is based in three different aspects: the formation and training ofgeography teachers, the formation and training of geographers and the topics of investigation. Finaly, they identify the personality and characteristics of the Chilean Geography along the period between its formation on the contemporary times.Considerando los modos y ámbitos en que se origina la geografía chilena y el papel de las facultades de Filosofía, los autores intentan hacer inteligibles la formación y el desarrollo de la Geografía tal como se la practica en Chile. En tanto modos y ámbitos, se estudia la aparición de la geografía escolar desde inicios del XIX hasta la instalación del catedrático 8teffen en la Universidad de Chile y sus aportaciones a la formackJn de pedagogos en Geografía. Igual tarea es emprendida respecto de la ingenierla geográfica, abarcando desde los cartógrafos militares de la Independencia hasta la creación del programa universitario de 1853 y las aportaciones de los ingenieros geógrafos formados en tal programa. Respecto del papel de las facultades de Filosofla, la indagación considera separadamente tres aspectos: la formación de profesorado en Geografla, la formación de geógrafos y los temas de investigación. A la luz del material analizado, los autores identifican los rasgos que caracterizan la personalidad de la geografla chilena a lo largo de su penodo de formación y desarrollo.
