Few today question the need for a land-use planning policy. However, when an attempt is made to discuss the subject in more detail, various discrepancies arise, starting with the different meanings that the subject has for different actors. This paper presents a vision of the subject from the perspective of geography, discusses some possible options in this area and briefly reviews the possibilities based on existing instruments.En la actualidad pocos ponen en duda la necesidad de una política de ordenamiento del territorio. Sin embargo, cuando se intenta discutir más detalladamente sobre el tema surgen variadas discrepancias, partiendo por los distintos significados que el tema tiene para diversos actores. En este trabajo se presenta una visión sobre el tema, desde la geografía, se discuten algunas opciones posibles en la materia y se revisan someramente las posibilidades a partir de los instrumentos existentes.
