"Noisy democracy" : imágenes y discusiones sobre la democracia chilena en los documentos norteamericanos frente a la elección presidencial de 1970

| dc.description | This publication sheds light on discussions that arose surrounding Chile within the US foreign policy bureaucracy in response to the presidential election of1970, and the impact of images of the country in the creation of US foreign policy. It draws on documents recently declassified by the State Department, compiled in the volumes Foreign Relations of the United States, which provide a window on the day-to-day process of building US foreign policy. These documents show the way in which different members of the country's foreign policy apparatus interpreted Chile and its democracy, affecting the decision-making process. This perspective sets out to put forward new questions in a problem that has classically been addressed from the perspective of concealed action and intervention. It is concluded that images of Chile as an exception or as a stereotype of Latin America as a region affected the creation of US foreign policy, determining the actions that the superpower was to take in response to Chile's challenging political scenario. | en-US |
| dc.description | La presente investigación muestra las discusiones que surgieron sobre Chile en el aparato burocrático de política exterior norteamericana frente a la elección presidencial de 1970 y el impacto de las imágenes sobre nuestro país en la configuración de la política exterior de Estados Unidos. Se utilizaron documentos recientemente desclasificados por el Departamento de Estado, compilados en los volúmenes Foreign Relations of the United States, los cuales retratan la dimensión cotidiana del proceso de construcción de política exterior estadounidense. Estos documentos muestran la manera en que distintos miembros de aparato de política exterior de ese país interpretaron Chile y su democracia, afectando el proceso de toma de decisión. Esta perspectiva busca proponer nuevas preguntas a un problema que ha sido clásicamente entendido desde la perspectiva de la intervención y la acción encubierta. Se concluye que las imágenes de Chile como una excepción o Chile como un estereotipo en la región latinoamericana, impactaron la construcción de la política exterior norteamericana, determinando las acciones que tomaría la potencia ante el desafiante escenario político chileno. | es-ES |
