| dc.description | The objective of this paper is to reflect on the history of territorial divisions in New Spain, taking into account the forgetfulness of what Humboldt called the "ancient division". It starts from the question why Spanish and New-Hispanic scientists and engineers did not represent this "ancient division" in the provinces, unlike the cartographers of the enemy European powers of the Catholic Monarchy. For this, the history of critical cartography has been considered, in the sense of thinking of maps as images, as representations that need to be contextualized, in order to understand the particularities of territorial organization in the Indies.

| dc.description | El objetivo del presente trabajo es reflexionar sobre la historia de las divisiones territoriales en la Nueva España teniendo en cuenta los olvidos de lo que Humboldt llamó la "división antigua" . Se parte de la pregunta porqué los científicos e ingeniero españoles y novohispanos no representaron esta "división antigua" en provincias, a diferencia de los cartógrafos de las potencias europeas enemigas de la Monarquía católica. Para ello se ha considerado la historia de la cartografía crítica, en el sentido de pensar a los mapas como imágenes, como representaciones que es necesario contextualizar, a fin de comprender las particularidades de la organización territorial en Indias. | es-ES |
