dc.descriptionThe present article proposes a critical genealogy of the discourses associated with the emergence of transgender category. Coined as a reaction to the medical and psychiatric category of transsexualism, the transgender category has emphasized the political and cultural dimensions of the trans experience. As such, it has attempted to recover trans voices and narratives suppressed by the medical and psychiatric institutions connected to transsexualism. Despite being inclusive of a multiplicity of gender variations, we attempt to argue that the transgender category continues to be defined by the epistemological y political limitations of its northern origin in Anglo-Saxon countries, therefore without breaking away from the normative, colonial, and binary character of the transsexual discourse.en-US
dc.descriptionEl presente artículo plantea una genealogía crítica de los discursos asociados a la emergencia de la categoría transgénero. Acuñada como reacción a la categoría médico-psiquiátrica de la transexualidad, la categoría transgénero ha puesto el énfasis en las dimensiones culturales y políticas de la experiencia trans. En ese marco, ha buscado rescatar las voces y narrativas trans suprimidas por la institucionalidad médica-psiquiátrica vinculada al transexualismo. A pesar de ser inclusiva de múltiples variaciones del género, intentamos argumentar que la categoría transgénero continúa estando fuertemente definida por las limitaciones epistemológicas y políticas propias de su origen en un contexto académico y activista de países del norte anglosajón, sin quebrar por lo tanto con el carácter normativo, colonial y binario del discurso transexual.es-ES
