dc.descriptionThis research seeks to examine the circulation and reception of the ideas of Cesare Lombroso in Chile, who helped define a new image of “criminal man” marked by a biological determinism which explained its danger and appearance within the urban setting of the turn of the century. Turning away from the views attributing the crime to free will and the destruction of social life, criminal anthropology, helped reinforce “scientifically” many prejudices that stigmatize the popular sectors according to their physical features, skin color and customs, building a sort of “common enemy” to which should be preventive and defensive measures. The review of the writings of time and the press, show that this new criminological knowledge was well received by authorities and professionals study period.en-US
dc.descriptionEsta investigación busca examinar la circulación y recepción de las ideas de Cesare Lombroso en Chile, que ayudaron a definir una nueva imagen del “hombre criminal”, marcada por un determinismo biológico que explicaba su peligrosidad y apariencia dentro del escenario urbano del cambio de siglo. Apartándose de las opiniones que atribuían el delito al libre albedrío y al quebrantamiento de la convivencia social, la antropología criminal ayudó a reforzar “científicamente” muchos prejuicios que estigmatizaban a los sectores populares en función de sus rasgos físicos, color de piel y costumbres, construyendo una suerte de “enemigo común” ante el cual debían tomarse medidas preventivas y defensivas. La revisión de los escritos de época y de la prensa evidencian que este nuevo saber criminológico tuvo bastante acogida en autoridades y profesionales del período en estudio.es-ES
