Abstract
This paper addresses the foundation of the Convent “Nuestra Señora de la Salud” in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, in 1747, noting the role of the local elite and interest in the erection of this convent for Spanish women. The monastery represents one of the strategies of this group of Spaniards to strengthen the city of Patzcuaro in the conflict with Valladolid to get the capital of the bishopric. We also discuss how the Dominican convent of Patzcuaro, came to reinforce the prestige of the most important families who held the political, economic and social power of the city in the second half of the eighteenth century. Este trabajo aborda la fundación del Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Salud en Pátzcuaro, Obispado de Michoacán, en 1747, señalando el papel de la élite local y su interés en la erección de este convento de monjas para mujeres españolas. El convento representó una de las estrategias de este grupo de españoles para fortalecer la ciudad de Pátzcuaro en el conflicto con Valladolid por conseguir la capitalidad del obispado. También analizaremos cómo el convento de dominicas de Pátzcuaro venía a reforzar el prestigio de las más importantes familias que detentaban el poder político, económico y social de la ciudad en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII.
