In this article we study the existing projects for the establishment in the capital of Virreinato del Río de la Plata of a “Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País”, one of the most characteristic institutions of the Spanish American Enlightenment. It is striking that, being Buenos Aires one of the most benefited jurisdictions by the Bourbon reforms and, by counting -unlike other american capital cities- with an active illustrated group since the late eighteenth century, these projects have been unsuccessful. We try to offer some hypotheses of the reasons for this failure.En el presente artículo buscaremos indagar en los proyectos que existieron para la constitución en la capital del Virreinato del Río de la Plata de una Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, una de las instituciones más característica de la llamada Ilustración hispanoamericana. Siendo Buenos Aires una de las jurisdicciones más beneficiadas con las reformas borbónicas y contando con un grupo ilustrado activo desde finales del siglo XVIII, llama la atención que, a diferencia de otras capitales americanas, esos proyectos hayan resultado finalmente infructuosos. Buscaremos entonces ofrecer algunas hipótesis de los porqué de este fracaso.
