We analyze in this paper the controversy over the uses of the anthropological collections that existed in both the Museum of Ethnology and Anthropology and the National Museum of Natural History, in Santiago of Chile between 1912 to 1929. We argue that debates between these museums were mainly influenced by three aspects: the quantity of pieces gathered, the storage and the physical preservation of the objects, and their public and official recognition as a scientific agency by the political authorities. By placing the disputes over objects and collections we can see the eclectic nature of the anthropology at the time and for what such debates and disagreements signified to the definition of the anthropology as a science during early decades of twentieth century.En esta investigación analizamos una serie de controversias sobre las colecciones existentes en los Museos de Etnología y Antropología (MEA) y el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural (MNHN), en Santiago entre los años 1912 y 1929. Las principales hipótesis que guiaron nuestra investigación nos indicaron que las controversias sostenidas entre ambos museos se debieron a tres factores: en las condiciones materiales del resguardo de los objetos; la cantidad de piezas existentes en ambas instituciones; y el mayor acceso a redes institucionales, afinidades intelectuales y científicas. A partir del destino y usos de las colecciones antropológicas sostenemos que es posible ver una serie de conflictos y desavenencias sobre el rol que debía tener la antropología en el desarrollo científico nacional en las primeras décadas del siglo XX.
