dc.descriptionChile has suffered the negative consequences of numerous large earthquakes (>MW 8.0) that generated equally large tsunamis. This paper analyses one of colonial Chile´s least known earthquakes. The March 15th , 1657 earthquake destroyed the city of Concepcion and damaged infrastructure in the city of Santiago and rural properties between Quillota and Arauco. At the same time, it generated a major tsunami that destroyed everything in its path in Concepcion and the gulf of Arauco. This paper uses known and previously unknown first-hand colonial sources to describe scientifically this important seismic event, that closely resembles the recent February 27th, 2010, Maule earthquake.en-US
dc.descriptionChile ha sufrido las consecuencias de numerosos megaterremotos (>MW 8.0) que generan grandes tsunamis. Este trabajo analiza uno de los terremotos menos conocidos de la historia colonial de Chile. Se trata del terremoto del 15 de marzo de 1657 que destruyó la ciudad de Concepción y generó daños importantes en la infraestructura de la ciudad de Santiago y las propiedades rurales entre Quillota y Arauco. A la vez, se generó un gran tsunami que llevó todo lo que quedaba en Concepción y el golfo de Arauco. Esta investigación utiliza fuentes coloniales conocidas e inéditas para caracterizar científicamente este importante evento sísmico semejante al conocido terremoto del 27 de febrero de 2010.es-ES
